Well, maybe Snowy wasn’t mine but he wasn’t Jake’s either.
One of the best things about living in Montana was the wilderness. That and the wild herds of horses that came around from time to time.
I’d watched Snowy grow up as his herd would come through a valley each winter on the ranch I grew up on. He’d gone from a wobble-legged foal to a powerful stallion who took over as leader of the herd of wild horses.
And that’s when the arrogant bronc rider saw him. Jake and his family came over to the ranch my family worked on to help with a mountain lion problem. He and I sat in a tree together, talking about how well he’d done in the last rodeo and how he was on his way to the big time – whatever that meant.
The thundering hooves beat the valley floor below us. It shook the tree we sat in, the animals were so spirited as they ran into the place they’d wintered in forever, I supposed.
Jake’s eyes flashed with desire. Not for me, but for the white stallion that had led the herd into the open for all to see. Only Snowy had no idea who was watching and how much danger he’d put himself in.
Snowy had one thing going for him though. I was on his side…
